How CBT Helps Children

An explanation for parents about what their child will learn in CBT.

Your child is learning Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). This guide explains what CBT is and how you can support your child.

What is CBT?

CBT is a talking therapy that helps children understand the connection between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. It teaches practical skills for managing difficult emotions like anxiety, anger, or sadness.

What will my child learn?

• To notice their thoughts and feelings • To recognise "thinking traps" (unhelpful thought patterns) • To test out whether their worries are realistic • To face fears gradually and safely • Coping strategies for difficult moments

How you can help

  • Ask about what they're learning — show interest without pressure
  • Help them practise skills at home (the therapist will guide you)
  • Praise effort, not just outcomes
  • Model healthy coping yourself — children learn by watching
  • Avoid reassurance-seeking traps — help them use their skills instead

This resource is for parents of children in CBT.
