Supporting Skills Practice at Home

Practical tips for parents to help their child practise CBT skills.

Practical tips for supporting your child's CBT skills practice at home.

Daily support

  • Create a calm time to talk about feelings
  • Use "I wonder" statements instead of questions
  • Validate feelings before problem-solving
  • Celebrate small steps of progress
  • Keep homework tasks visible and scheduled

When your child is anxious

Instead of: "Don't worry, it'll be fine" Try: "I can see you're worried. What thought is your worry telling you? Let's think about whether that's likely."
